Addis Ababa Law School Project
The President of Addis Ababa University, its law faculty, and the Ethiopian Government have requested that DLA Piper and Northwestern University School of Law undertake a project to assist the Addis Ababa Law School in curriculum development, expansion of its research capability, and the rebuilding of its law library. Although the premier law school in Ethiopia, Addis Ababa Law School currently faces extremely challenging circumstances. It is severely hampered by aging facilities and a lack of financial resources that compromise the school’s ability to provide a solid legal education to its students—the future leaders of Ethiopia. Consulting firm, Accenture, will also be a project partner in this endeavor.
The Addis Ababa Law School project will last for two years. DLA Piper, Northwestern Law faculty, and Accenture lawyers will teach short courses, primarily in areas relating to economic development; work with the law school to expand both its hard volume and data-base library collection; provide expanded opportunities for Addis Ababa law faculty to obtain further training in the US and elsewhere; aid the faculty in creating a research center and offering continuing training to existing Ethiopian lawyers; and help the Law School plan and host a conference on law and economic development.
During the initial phase of the project, New Perimeter assembled a project team of DLA Piper lawyers from Europe, the United States and the Middle East. Four teams of lawyers traveled to Addis Ababa during the spring 2008 semester to teach two-week courses in international taxation, international arbitration, corporate crime, and international negotiation to business LLM students at the Law School. The New Perimeter team is currently assisting the Law School to plan and host a conference on law and economic development in Addis Ababa in November 2008.
